For over 20 years, Dr. William C. Burns II has combined his love of sports and his passion for medicine at Craig Ranch Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Frisco, Texas. Dr. Burns believes in doing things right the first time by correcting underlying problems rather than just managing symptoms. With an emphasis on shoulders and knees, Dr. Burns is a leader and an innovator in the field of minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery and reconstruction for athletes of all ages. Through one-on-one visits, the service provided at Craig Ranch Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine is tailored to each athlete’s needs and goals -- working at every turn to ensure that clients are able to continue their athletic lifestyles.
Dr. Burns is originally from Boise, Idaho. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University. He attended medical school at UT Southwestern Medical School where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society. He received his orthopedic training at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Burns completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Burns is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery and was one of the first Orthopedic Surgeons to be Board Certified in Sports Medicine. Dr. Burns was nominated for the Charles Neer award by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society for recognition of outstanding clinical or research investigation. He won the Dow Corning Wright Award presented by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society for outstanding foot and ankle research. Dr. Burns won the Cabaud Memorial Award given by the American Orthopedic Society for sports medicine for outstanding research.
Dr. Burns is a team player, providing care for a number of teams and athletes. He has been the team physician for the Dallas Freeze of the Central Hockey League, the NAHL Texas Tornado Junior Hockey team, and the AFL Dallas Vigilantes. He has been the team physician for Plano East Senior High School for over 25 years and was recently inducted into the Athletic Hall of Honor for the Plano Independent School District. Dr. Burns has served as the orthopedic consultant for the Kurt Thomas Gymnastics since 2004. Dr. Burns currently serves as the Head Team Physician for the Frisco Fighters of the IFL, a professional indoor football team.
Dr. Burns has served as Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, Texas; Chief of Staff at Centennial Medical Center; and Chairman of the Board of the Surgery Centre at Craig Ranch as well as the Hospital at Craig Ranch. Dr. Burns has served as the Medical Director for the Craig Ranch Surgery Center since 2013. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Plano Physician's Group and the Craig Ranch Surgery Center. Dr. Burns was voted Best Doctor by his peers in Collin County in 2018 for D Magazine.
